Lisbon--in Two Parts (October 22, 2023)

This post is a day late for various reasons...more on that later.

Our second full day in Lisbon started off beautifully with the sun out and a light breeze.  After coffee and a pastry, we rode the metro down to Praça do Comercio.  Great views here:

Plaza with statue of King José I

Portuguese sweets, which will kill me now.

Tram 28, which is the one that tourists ride.  It does go to all the sights but it's very crowded.

Things started going downhill after seeing all of the above.  We had been expecting it to rail during our whole trip, but I felt we had been pretty lucky so far with just quick showers and cloudy skies otherwise.  Not today.  It started pouring down and foolishly I didn't bring the umbrellas.  We quickly headed back to the subway and our hotel.  It was about 10 am.  After about an hour, it let up enough for us to go out to El Corte Inglés, a store chain we discovered on our 2017 Spain trip.  They have everything--including food--so we went there for lunch.  That turned out to be a big mistake--Fe's lunch made her very sick.

The suspect meal

We hurried back to the hotel (with a couple of interruptions) and after Fe got back in bed she told me to go out and see more of the city, which I reluctantly did.

So began Part Two.  I'll just post the pictures with brief captions (and background links) since nothing as exciting as what I described above happened.  I did walk until I thought my calves would fall off.

There are buildings like this all around.

See what I mean?

Naturally, Mr. Intermodal rode a tram.  Not Tram 28.

Panoramic view from the same lookout point.  I'm not typing that again.

Statue of Luís de Camões, Portugal's greatest poet.  Hopefully this makes up for not getting the photograph of his tomb earlier. Those hoodlums were not making it easy for me to get a good shot (I am an old man).

Inside the Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Encarnação. Yes, you're learning Portuguese.

See the Chinese lantern hanging off the balcony?  I luckily found my way into Lisbon's Chinatown.

Another view of the castle.  The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors held this high ground before the Portuguese occupied it in 1147.  It was a good place to keep an eye on everyone.

The Marquês de Pombal statue in the roundabout.  If you look real close, there's a seagull on top of his head.  I don't think  it was the same one we saw when we got here (our hotel was right up the street from this), but who knows?

I got back to our room at about 6:00 pm.  Fe asked me what I saw, and I said, "I barely saw anything through my worry about you."  Most of you know what she said to that.  I did share the pictures with her and she tagged me on her Facebook postings of those.

I'll continue the medial report on my next post.

Here are two phrases I used while rambling about the city:
Pode ajudar-me?  Can you help me?
Estou perdido.  I'm lost.
